Letter of the Law

from Storyhill Live
(also on Johnny's eponymous solo album)

They had a good deal going with his dad's money
The bastard just pulled a gun and took it all away
It was gonna be smooth sailing if they could have done it
It was gonna be so good

They were gonna move to the suburbs and start a family
They were going to sent all their kids off to private schools
They were gonna take them to church every Sunday
They were gonna be so good
Living by the letter of the law

He goes to the bar on the corner of 8th and Babcock
Where he carved his name on a table when he was seventeen
And sometimes just before closing he tries to find it
Just to look at that name again

His friends are fewer than they were in those days
They've all gone off to make their livings far away
And letters come just before Christmas just so they can tell him
We are doing so good
Living by the letter of the law

Luxury of luxury
Belongs to someone else, someone else
As the time to think of the consequence
To study the evidence

They had a good deal going with his dad's money
